The affordable Peugeot 208 is both practical and economical. This elegant French supermini is perfect for the city – and is no slouch on the motorway, either. The very safe 208 is also ideal for small families and young professionals alike, and comes well-equipped.
The 208’s purposeful posture owes much to its rising beltline – and sloping bonnet, over which the driver is provided with a good view of the road ahead. A five-door body style ensures that access to the rear passenger compartment is always straightforward. The car’s paint finish is perfectly complemented by a number of body-coloured fixtures, which include power-operated and heated door mirrors. What’s more, the 208 is adorned with 15-inch alloy wheels as standard, which are sufficiently lightweight in order to better deliver enhanced efficiency.
Inside the 208, there’s plenty of room in the front compartment for two full-size adults. A tilt-and-telescoping leather-clad steering wheel enables the driver to establish a comfortable position, and provides easy control over a number of functions. The rear row, meanwhile, is ideal for conveying two adult travellers, or three younger occupants. A number of useful cubby spaces are featured throughout the cabin. These include voluminous door bins and a centre-console tray that is perfect for supporting a smartphone as it charges via the car’s USB port. The 208 possesses a 285-litre boot space. If more cargo capacity is required, simply fold the rear seats to deliver 743 litres of load space.
A 1.2-litre 68bhp petrol engine is fitted as standard with entry-level Access trim lines, managing up to 60.1mpg, and producing a 108g/km CO2 emission figure. An even more efficient 1.6-litre 99bhp diesel unit comes with Allure grades and above, returning an impressive 94.2mpg combined figure, while producing emissions as low as 79g/km.
Technology and safety
Audio entertainment is provided by a six-speaker sound system, which includes DAB radio and an AM/FM tuner, and is accessible via the vehicle’s touchscreen. Bluetooth connectivity features too, enabling music streaming and safe hands-free telephony.
Speaking of safety, the 208 has been awarded a five-star crash test rating by Euro NCAP, and is fitted with a wide range of driver aids and passive protective features. Included are Electronic Stability Programme and Anti-lock Braking System, which help to significantly minimise skidding. Hill-hold Assist, meanwhile, stops the car from rolling uncontrolled whenever the engine is started on a slope. Travellers of all ages are kept safe by the inclusion of six airbags and ISOFIX child seat fixtures, among other things.
