Is it an MPV or is it an SUV? In truth, the Peugeot 5008 is both. It has all the qualities of the former, while retaining the practicality associated with the latter. Easy to drive, spacious, well-equipped and boasting a five-star Euro NCAP rating, the 5008 is an excellent family car choice.
This fine-looking vehicle comes with numerous standard fixtures that only add to its considerable road presence. For instance, the 5008’s front fascia sports a chrome-finished radiator grille. Several body-coloured fixtures are included too, such as door handles and door mirrors. Furthermore, the car is adorned with 17-inch alloy wheels, which not only have visual appeal but are light enough to help deliver enhanced efficiency. This versatile vehicle is crowned with roof rails, which present extra load-bearing possibilities, while exterior illumination includes front fog lamps that provide optimal visibility whenever thick mist descends.
Inside the 5008’s well-built and upscale cabin, the driver’s area has something of a cockpit look and feel to it. Controls and displays are arranged in such a way as to be easily accessible to the person behind the wheel. Seven seats are fitted in total, with the rearmost positions being particularly suitable for younger members of the family. A number of useful cubby spaces are placed throughout the cabin, including capacious door bins and hidden compartments in the floor. With rearmost seats folded, the 5008 boasts a 780-litre boot space, which increases to 2,000 litres with all but the front seats flipped.
Entry-level Active trim lines are powered by a 1.2-litre 130bhp petrol engine, which manages up to 55.4mpg, and produces a 117g/km CO2 emission figure. Optimal efficiency is delivered by 1.6-litre 100bhp diesel unit, which returns as much as 68.9mpg, while producing emissions as low as 106g/km. A good balance between efficiency and performance is provided by a 2.0-litre 180bhp diesel unit. This produces 400Nm of torque and 0-60mph in less than nine seconds, while managing a combined 58.9mpg figure.
Technology and safety
An attractive digital binnacle features, in place of a conventional instrument cluster. An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system is installed as standard, too. As well as a six-speaker sound system and satellite navigation, the 5008 comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This means that the driver can mirror his or her smartphone via the car’s display screen. Bluetooth connectivity is included too.
As well as driver aids and passive safety features such a speed-limiting Cruise Control, rear parking sensors and a driver-alert system, Autonomous Emergency Braking is fitted as standard. This important piece of kit significantly reduces the chance of rear-end collisions, by automatically applying maximum braking pressure whenever impact is deemed likely.
